A key innovation feature of the Maryland Avenue Bridge– a post-tensioned deck system using fiber-reinforced concrete– enhanced durability by reducing the potential for deck cracking during the move. In addition, the use of lightweight fill (expanded polystyrene blocks) minimized future settling over the soft soils in the project area.

The bridge was moved into place using SPMTs in one move operation for each span. Each 105-foot span weighed more than 2.6 million pounds and had to be transported 1,000 feet, which took about two hours each to move into place. The project also included approach roadway off-ramp reconstruction, drainage, traffic control, the Gateway Trail pedestrian tunnel under Maryland Avenue, and utility relocation. The bridge opened for traffic on time, providing room for the Cayuga I-35W auxiliary lanes.
