Project Description

This project consisted of construction of two abutments, eighteen piers, an operator’s control house, a structural steel double-leaf rolling bascule lift spanning the navigational channel, a lightweight concrete deck placed on the bascule span, eight steel sheeting/concrete protection cells and fender system to protect the bascule piers. The project also included eight spans of 54-inch pre-stressed girders with a nine-inch concrete deck, ten spans of cast-in-place concrete haunch slab spans, concrete sidewalks, decorative concrete parapet with brick-faced pilasters, steel railing, approach grading and paving.

The controlling superstructure work was the 231-foot, six-inch double-leaf rolling bascule span. This is a structural steel span with a lightweight concrete deck that was constructed one half at a time to allow navigational traffic and commercial shipping traffic access through the channel during construction, as well as when the Bay of Green Bay was not accessible due to ice restrictions.
